Accumulating over 17 million records sold, singer/songwriter/producer J. Valentine is the perfect blend of real R&B – authentic, yet soulful with a sexy edge. Described by many music executives as a hybrid of R. Kelly &Babyface, this San Francisco native has flexed his talent both in out of the booth and brings a fresh perspective to the music scene combining quintessential R&B influences with a purely unique style. “I was raised by parents that loved music,” says J. “I grew up listening to Blue Magic, Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass, and those type of classic artists…my music definitely reflects that.”
Reaching the iTunes top 10 for R&B/Soul, J’s latest project – The Testimony – features artists Keri Hilson, Tank, Twista, Gucci Mane and LeToyaLuckett. Honing his forte and notably making major moves, he also recently dropped “My Girl” with mega-star Chris Brown for In MY Zone 2. Currently, J’s back in the studio creating the mixtape, LoVe& Other Drugs, featuring a multitude of hot collaborations across nine original songs, plus 2 remakes including Tony! Toni! Toné!‘s “Anniversary.” The first single, “I Love My Baby Mama,” is available on iTunes and has quickly flooded airwaves, gaining momentum in several markets. This project is an evolution of style for J, taking his already unadulterated approach to another level with personal reflections of his own experience.
Possessing an unmatched work ethic and considerable talent for all aspects of the music business, J has made his mark with numerous hits. Classics such as “I Like Them Girls” with Tyrese, the title track to N’Sync’s 9x platinum Celebrity album which sold 1.8 million in the first week, Mario’s “How Could You,” and Omarion’s “I’m Tryna” can be credited to his resume, along with displaying vocals on two posthumous 2Pac albums, Still I Rise and Until The End Of Time. As one of the most successful songwriters in the game, J’s even penned material for British superstar Alesha Dixon, creating the #1 UK hit “Breathe Slow.”
The force behind many of J’s music related projects is his production company, Song Dynasty. Partnering with his brother Bobby Newt, long-time friend Texx and Grammy nominated R&B star Tank, the team has collectively built an impressive resume by writing and producing countless hits for top artists such as Jamie Foxx, Keyshia Cole and Ron Isley. They recently executive produced Now or Never, Tanks first Atlantic Records project. Soaring to the top, the album’s second single, “Emergency,” held thenumber 5 spot on the Billboard music charts. Similarly, they created the hit song “Regret” for R&B star LeToyaLuckett featuring Ludacris, which also reached Billboard’s top 5.
Since singing with his brothers in The Newtrons at age 9, J has been heavy on the music scene. Early on he formed an avenue for new artists by founding CityBoyZ Muzik label and signing hip-hop artist Bailey, and subsequently dropped the Bay Area anthem “Go Dumb” – originally a record from his Hide Ya Breezymixtape. Also well known for his wildly successful and sultry single “She Worth the Trouble” which garnered over a half million YouTube hits, J’s generated a collection of memorable songs and authentic street tracks that fans love. “Why sleep, if you’re living the DREAM ?” says J. “I love what I do, and this is definitely my dream job… so I don’t ever want to be second. I want to win at all times, and I work hard to accomplish that.”
